2016 Westwood Green screen 

The 7th Annual Westwood Green Screen 2016 comes to Westwood starting Tuesday, March 8th running through Monday, March 14.  Each day brings an opportunity to screen a film or take part in an activity meant to broaden your understanding of the issues important in our world today.  This event is made possible by a grant from the Bergen County Division of Historic and Cultural Affairs and the support of our sponsors:  HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, Friends of the Westwood Public Library and our media sponsor Pascack Valley Community Life.

Arts in the Environmental Movement:

​A month-long exhibit of banners, posters and sculpture from the climate and the anti-fracking movement, plus artwork made of recycled materials by Herrat Somerhoff, nationally acclaimed sculptor and visual artist.

TUESDAY MARCH 8

Sixth extinction book discussion:

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, The Sixth Extinction traces the fascinating stories of vanished species. Kolbert elucidates how, by burning fossil fuels, we are rapidly changing the atmosphere, the oceans, and the climate, forcing potentially millions more species into extinction. Discussion moderated by Gregory Mountain, Professor Earth & Planetary Sciences at Rutgers University and Adjunct Senior Research Scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.  Tuesday, March 8 at 7pm. Westwood Public Library.

GALA: 

The Green Screen Gala begins at 5:30pm at the Library.  Includes hot and cold appetizers and small plates from Bibi'z Restaurant and Lounge, Wine tasting provided by Organic Vintages of New Jersey.  $25.00.  Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30pm. Westwood Public Library.  Ticket Required.

ANGEL AZUL:

The story of one artist’s inspiring attempt to draw attention to endangered coral reefs worldwide. Eco-sculptor Jason DeCaires Taylor casts cement statues from live human models and creates an artificial coral reef in the shape of an angel, a symbol of hope, on the ocean floor.  Wednesday, March 9 at 7pm. Westwood Public Library.  Ticket Required.

TRASH TO TREASURE: Making Beautiful Art from Throwaway Materials:

 Herrat Sommerhoff, an Award-winning artist, known for her distinctive outdoor sculptures using recycled materials, will lead a recycling art program for students 3rd grade and older.  (Younger students may attend accompanied by an adult).  Please register for this event, space is limited.  Thursday, March 10 at 3:30pm. Westwood Public Library. 

racing extinction:

A team of artists and activists expose the hidden world of endangered species and mass extinction with never-before-seen images that will change the way we see the planet. An inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it.   Discussion led by Rachel Wieland Professor and Environmental Club Advisor, Bergen Community College.  Unrated/90min. Thursday, March 10 at 7pm.  HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, 250 Old Hook Road, Westwood, NJ  07675.

Sunday March 13

This changes everything:

Inspired by Naomi Klein's international non-fiction bestseller, this powerful documentary presents seven portraits of communities on the front lines of climate change. Klein presents her most controversial and exciting idea: that climate change may be our best opportunity to transform our failed economic system into something radically better. Discussion led by 350NJ leaders and Bob Narus, Citizens Climate Lobby.  Unrated/90min.  Sunday, March 13 at 1pm.  Westwood Public Library.   

Art for the Planet

Westwood Gallery is pleased to present - Art  for the Planet – an exhibit of art focusing on vanishing species and endangered environments. A wine and cheese opening will be held Sunday March 13th from 3-5 PM. A percentage of gallery sales will be donated to Westwood Green Screen. The exhibit will continue through March 20th and is free and open to the public. Westwood Gallery: 10 Westwood Avenue in Westwood. for more information call 201 666 1800.​

Monday march 14

The future of energy:

An eye-opening film that captures the movement across the U.S. to transition to renewable energy and what everyday people are doing to help foster that shift.
